Salad, salad or more salad. Is Body Fuel the healthiest cafe in town?
Body Fuel is a new cafe on Church Road in Hove, with a focus on healthy, nutritious, clean food. Open from breakfast til early evening, the cafe serves up filling salads, seasonal soups, superfood smoothies, protein shakes and clean treats.
Fitness is a big part of the ethos at Body Fuel and owner, Jason says: “I’ve always been into fitness and eating well, but it’s hard to find really nutritious, healthy food that tastes great and doesn’t leave me hungry. I’ve opened Body Fuel Cafe for others who want to eat healthily without compromising on flavour, portion size or quality.”
The menu is based around protein, and co-owner Verity says “Fitness lovers needing that extra protein boost will love the fact they can order grilled rump steak with their breakfast eggs and avocado or enjoy a protein shake at 8pm. As a mum myself I’m also really excited about our healthy kids’ menu, which includes delicious, good-for-you treats like wholemeal banana pancakes and mini smoothies.”
I was invited down to check it out and took Tom along, to try and cure his (massive) hangover.
The first thing you’ll notice is the stark, green and white branding and frontage, which I personally found pretty garish. Although it makes Body Fuel quite hard to miss, it’s not particularly inviting, and once inside, the bright colours continue to dominate, except for an exposed brick wall, which I gravitated towards.
After a quick chat with the lovely Verity, we started scanning the large menu above the open kitchen space.
The breakfast menu runs until 2pm and includes ludicrously healthy options, like Homemade Granola, and an Egg White Omelette… For those of us with no interest in watching our figures, the Poached or Scrambled Eggs with smoked salmon and spinach or the Smashed Avocado with fresh chilli and poached eggs are probably the most indulgent options.
For lunch, you can have salad, salad or salad. Choose one of the house options, like the Falafel Feast (£6.50) of homemade falafel, spiced couscous, rocket, feta, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, grated carrot, yellow peppers, broccoli and homemade hummus or make your own from the salad bar.
Gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options are available across the menu, and everything is made fresh on the premises using locally-sourced ingredients.
The smoothie options at Body Fuel are all priced at £4.95 and there’s an impressive range to choose from. Tom went for the Strawberry Split – strawberries, banana, pomegranate seeds, fresh basil leaves, vanilla extract and almond milk and I had the Purple Performance – raw beetroot, goji berries, banana, raspberries, protein powder, fresh ginger, almond milk and lemon juice.
Both were delicious and well balanced, with none of the ingredients being too prominent or overpowering. Tom instantly felt his hangover seeping away…
We ordered the Smashed Avocado with fresh chilli and poached eggs on sourdough and created a salad to share. Medium-rare grilled steak was the unanimous decision, served on a base of roasted sweet potato, with a boiled egg, roasted cauliflower, roasted vegetables, rocket, edamame beans, crumbled feta, and a chilli and lime dressing.
Both dishes hit the spot.
Maybe we just won at ordering, but our steak salad was excellent. The steak itself was very nicely cooked and the combination of roasted veggies, salty feta, and mild chilli dressing worked together a treat. Body Fuel, you have my permission to add this to your menu as the ‘Scoffers Special’.
The smashed avocado mix was lovely, chunky, and fresh and the eggs on top were perfectly poached. A steal at £6.
The branding and decor had set my expectations pretty low, but Body Fuel happily surprised me and delivered some great dishes. There’s definitely a market for this kind of healthy eating cafe, and the only local competition that comes to mind is Love Fit on Queens Road, in Brighton.
A salad will never be my first choice but if I lived nearby, Body Fuel would be my go-to choice for a smoothie and a healthy lunch. Service was with a huge smile, and their menu must be one of the most reasonable in town.
